RTÜK - Strong Media Conscious Society Summit

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) hosted the Strong Media, Conscious Society Summit, which Başkent University Faculty of Communication attended. Held at the Ankara Bilkent Hotel Conference Hall on April 29-30, the summit featured thematic roundtable workshops and a digital poster competition addressing topics such as the social impact of media content, strengthening media literacy, ethical publishing, violence, gender, and discrimination.
At the opening of the summit, RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin delivered the message that “Strong media is only possible with a conscious society,” while Başkent University Vice Rector and faculty member Prof. Dr. Özcan Yağcı emphasized the transformative power of communication in his speech and stated that the university would continue to support young communicators. 

 

On the first day of the summit, roundtable workshops were held on the themes of “Daytime and Magazine Programs,” “News Programs,” “Television Series,” “Commercial Communication Broadcasts,” “Sports and Environment Programs,” “Viewers,” and “Youth.” These sessions were moderated by Prof. Dr. G. Senem Gençtürk Hızal, Dean of the Faculty of Communication, and Prof. Dr. Günseli Bayraktutan; participants included Prof. Dr. Özcan Yağcı and Prof. Dr. H. Hale Künüçen; Research Assistant S. Yankı Özcan and Research Assistant Aleyna Ceren Kaplan contributed as rapporteurs, while Dr. Banu Erşanlı Taş, Head of the Communication and Design Department, served as a jury member in the digital poster competition titled “Negativity in Media Content and Negative Media Language.”

On the second day, the report containing the solutions proposed by all tables was presented by RTÜK Secretary General Esin Nacar, and the event continued with an international panel titled “The Impact of Negative Content in the Media on Society and Proposed Solutions,” moderated by RTÜK Vice President Deniz Güler. The summit concluded with the award ceremony for the poster competition, which had been on display for two days.

This event, organized with the active contribution of Başkent University and its Faculty of Communication, once again highlighted the importance our university places on collaborations in the areas of media responsibility and social impact.
