The ‘Dr. Fazıl Küçük and the Voice of the People II International Symposium,’ organised in collaboration with the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Foundation, Başkent University Faculty of Communication, Başkent University Turkish Cypriot History Research Centre (KITAMER) and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), was held in Ankara on 12–13 March 2025. KITAMER coordinated the symposium, which was attended by a total of 29 academics from the TRNC, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Germany, Italy and Turkmenistan.
The symposium examined Dr. Fazıl Küçük's political struggle, his identity as a physician and his contributions to the Turkish Cypriot community through the Halkın Sesi newspaper, accompanied by scientific papers. Prior to the event, on Tuesday, 11 March, the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Foundation and the academics presenting papers at the symposium visited Anıtkabir and laid a wreath at the Mausoleum. On the same day, a Cooperation Protocol was signed between the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Foundation and Başkent University.
The symposium was opened on Wednesday, 12 March, by TRNC President Ersin Tatar, Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, TRNC Ambassador to Ankara İsmet Korukoğlu, TİKA President Serkan Kayalar, Mehmetçik Foundation General Manager Retired Brigadier General İsmail Şanlı, Cyprus Turkish Cultural Association President Tolga Ünsaldı, Retired Brigadier General Cemal Ergun Eruç, a veteran of the Cyprus War, veterans of the Cyprus War, and numerous bureaucrats and academics. The symposium sessions, which began in the afternoon of the same day, continued for two days with intense participation.
On the evening of 12 March, the gala dinner held at the Traditional Sports Federation Facilities was attended by TRNC President Ersin Tatar, Turkish Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Serdar Çam, TİKA President Serkan Kayalar, Başkent University Founder Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal, Rector Prof. Dr. Hakan Özkardeş and vice-rectors.
On Thursday, 13 March, the Board of Trustees of the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Foundation visited Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal at his office to express their gratitude for his contributions to the symposium. The symposium was successfully completed with the sessions held on the same day.
As part of the event, a photo exhibition entitled ‘Dr. Fazıl Küçük’ was opened at Başkent University Gallery Art with the participation of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal, Rector Prof. Dr. Hakan Özkardeş, members of the board of trustees, deans and academics. The exhibition was open to visitors between 18 and 25 March 2025.
Academics who participated in the symposium were bid farewell with a luncheon held at the Kınacızade Mansion in Ankara Castle after visiting the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations on Friday, 14 March. The symposium received extensive coverage in both Turkish and TRNC media.
